This guitar was played — and played hard, everysingle day for deacdes. It has undoubtedly lived more of a life than many of the other ’57 Strats that have passed through our hands over the years. And for good reason.
It has everything you’re looking for when you have that sound in your head: super resonant with fast attack but enough warmth and sustain. The neck is simply a dream come true — a full neck with light V-profile. For a guitar that has been played this extensively, it almost goes without saying that there are a few issues and alterations to mention. The front of the neck — the fingerboard and face of the headstock — has been oversprayed with clear lacquer. Our FTIR scans indicate a type of finish that would be typical of the mid to late 1960s, so the work may well date from that period. There are visible playing marks underneath the overspray as well as further wear on top of it, so this was certainly done a very long time ago. The original decal had already begun to wear away, and it seems very likely that the overspray was applied in order to preserve the logo. At some point, the guitar also had a different pickguard fitted, leaving four small additional screw holes underneath the current, genuine original pickguard. One additional hole in the original guard has been filled, as has a hole in the headstock from a previously fitted second string tree. We also found that the wear around the armrest area on the front of the body is not entirely the result of natural playwear. There appears to have been some kind of incident involving heat or fire at some point in the guitar’s life — whether on stage or elsewhere is impossible to say. It is possible that damaged material was removed at the time and that decades of subsequent playing then enlarged and blended the area further. In any case, this particular patch of “playwear” cannot be considered completely natural.
The remainder of the body has aged entirely naturally and retains exclusively its original finish.
The pickups still retain their original winding wire and solder and have never been rewound, and all pots and other components are original. There has naturally been some soldering here and there over the decades — something we would consider almost inevitable on a guitar that has seen this much use. Neck and body have matching dates 5/57. Most importantly, this is an absolutely wonderful guitar. with that typical deep contour body carve -for many this is the best year for the Stratocaster at all – the year when they got everything right. It sounds phenomenal – hear what Ali Neander said in the old video from 2014 – its one of the best he ever played. It comes in a slightly later 1958 Fender case. It is even conceivable that the guitar was already paired with this case when it was sold in 1958.
