1954 Fender Stratocaster – Sunburst

Here we have an interesting one: This guitar originally was born in 1954 – the first year of the Stratocaster. The body is dated 10/54 and has the original finish, pots and pickups (bridge pickup has been restored by Kloppmann using the original wire, neck pickup shows some work too). So far so good – the neck however is dated 1-56-1 which would indicate January 1956. 14 months is a long gap but it’s a fact that we can’t see any hint of the neck being replaced at any point. The paint on the back of the neck matches the missing paint on the body and the UV light exposes the right shape that wasn’t exposed to sunlight in the neck pocket – it appears to be the correct neck to this guitar. We don’t have a proper explanation for this without telling fairy tales but it’s most likely it’s been re-necked in the factory or just have been completed in January 1956. The story goes that a Fender employee started dating guitars 1-56 in December 1954 and they just added a -1 to make it 55…The serial plate also shows a late 55/early 56 serial: 8745. In the end we have a first year Stratocaster with a little later dated neck that clearly has been on the guitar since forever! We need to mention that this guitar sounds extremely good, it such a resonant piece. Comes incl. its original center pocket tweed case (54/55). See pictures of neck pocket and serial plate for reference.
