1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom – Ebony

This is a holy grail guitar since there are not many out there! This a real deal 1968 Les Paul Custom – one of the first ones ever made!

After dropping the Les Paul model in its original shape from the product line in 1961 Gibson soon figured out the guitarists were now ready for this model and recognized its potential and re-introduced the Les Paul in 1968. Now with a maple top it became the prototype for the Les Paul Custom as well know it today.

This is a great example of why everybody wants the first year 1968 model: The whole appearance of the finish, the piano black lacquer, the big round neck and the pronounced top carve makes it outstanding and totally different to everything that came afterwards. This is one of the lowest serial numbers known of this run (899362). The construction is still like it only was in 1968: they drilled the electronic cavity before they glued the maple top on the mahogany body – which is a hard proof of any 68. Long tenon and i-dot of course, one piece mahogany body and neck too. The tailpiece is still an original 1950s short seam!

Unfortunately the pots have been replaced at some point. The pickup covers have been off, we carefully inspected the bobbins and found two square hole pre-T-top patent number pickups which are also common on some 68 models. Newer jackplate. They have been wax potted once. The neck pickup cover may not be original. It has new jumbo frets which is great for its playability. Besides that everything is right, original waffle back tuners (there are better working reissues included too), plastic parts with roller marks and M69 rings. Interesting that it features some 50s parts, maybe that “leftover parts” myth (thats actually BS) comes from the earliest models? It also comes in an original 1950s Les Paul Custom case… an amazing piece!

There are not many of these out there – most of the “68” Customs people offer are early 1969 versions with late 68 pot codes. We can guarantee you one thing: This axe is way more like late 50s one than anything that came later. Its a different animal.
