1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty
Ebony
Art.Nr. GI69LPC-531498
Late 1968 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty in Ebony finish. This is it: a true 1968 Les Paul Custom. Although the serial number range is higher than that of some of the first 1969 models, this guitar was built in 1968 and shipped in January 1969. There are several guitars in the Gibson shipping ledgers in the 5315XX range that were shipped in mid to late December 1968. In the end, though, it does not really matter, since all of them were built and completed in 1968 anyway. It features the Gibson logo with dot over the “i”, a one-piece neck and body, a long neck tenon, and, of course, no volute or “Made in USA” stamp. Even the finish, used up to 1971, is almost identical to that of the 1950s “Fretless Wonder” guitars. Unlike the first eight or so years of the original Les Paul Custom, the reissue introduced in 1968 has a maple top and dual pickups — the Les Paul Custom as we know it today, and a guitar that has remained in the Gibson catalog ever since. The pots are dated to the 33rd week of 1968, although one pot has been replaced. The guitar has been refretted with jumbo frets, which makes it playable and actually usable for 99% of players. Other than that, it is all original. Like most ’68 Customs, it still comes with the 1950s-style short-seam aluminum stoptail. It shows some play wear, which only adds to its amazing vintage vibe. What a wonderful guitar. Comes complete with its original rectangular case.
