1961 Gibson SG Standard Factory Stoptail
Natural with Gold Hardware
Art.Nr. GI61SGSTD25388
This may be the rarest guitar we’ve ever found. What you see here is a 1961 Gibson SG Standard in FACTORY Natural finish with Gold hardware and stoptail. So basically not one custom options – this is three super cool features that make this guitar probably one-of-a-kind. We purchased this guitar from a collection in Europe and after carefully inspecting it, we could confirm that there was never any tremolo unit installed on this guitar at all. No screw holes, no nothing. The original stoptail is also mounted slightly slanted as you know it from the 50s Les Pauls. They are never straight, they always follow the angle of the ABR but are not parallel, they’re more in between. The stoptail studs are connected to ground wire. The next thing is the hardware – there are no signs that the golden Grovers that Gibson usually ued for the LP/SG Custom have been added later – no additional holes – they’re on this guitar since 1961. The complete hardware is Gold, also the pickup height adjustment screws, pickguard screws, switch… bone stock factory. We’ve seen heavily faded Cherry colored SGs before, many of them are faded, some are brown, no Cherry visible…but of course under the hood, under the pickguard, poker chip, backplate they’re still bright red. Well, this guitar isn’t. It’s even lighter colored, 100% natural clear coat finish. No Cherry anywhere ion this guitar. It was pretty clear that this must have been the original factory finish but we needed a further confirmation by our good friends at Gibson headquarters – this guitar with serial number 25388 is marked as “LP N” shipped on October 6th 1961. N stands for Natural. It’s 100% confirmed this is legit. On top of that the mahogany is figured super nicely. What a find – it sounds as good as it looks! PAF covers have been off, pickups have been unsoldered at one point. Light partial clear coat overspray on the back – it’s been played so it looks way cooler than it may have looked when it left the factory. More mature, less bling for sure. Other than that its all original, no changed parts. Comes including it’s original case.
