1960 Gibson Les Paul Custom – Cherry Red
Here we go again… we’re thrilled to announce we found a second uber-rare factory Cherry finished original early 1960 Gibson Les Paul Custom! We purchased this wonderful piece of history in Europe from it’s former owner who had it since 1978. He constantly played it.
One of only a very few made for Hagström/Sweden between 1959 and 1960. Rumors are its only 6, maybe 12 but definitely not more. We know of one 1959 model and two other 1960 models (one owned by Neil Schon, the other one was sold by GuitarPoint to Jason Isbell and can be seen in “The Collection” video by Gibson) but both 1960 models are later ones – this one is a rare “Double-0” series model, those were built between 59 and 60 with all the 1959 features, especially the rather bigger actually just perfect neck profile. This one has a nice neck, not too thick, kind of in-between.
The finish is faded almost completely to a nice red-brown-natural mahogany look. The remains of the original Cherry finish is still visible under the pickguard and in the cavities.
The guitar has a major headstock repair – it’s clearly visible and has been fixed long ago. It’s stable and did not require any work from our luthier. It also has a very old partial overspray with clear coat on the back to cover old belt buckle rush. But it’s been played a lot afterwards, as you can tell by the wear on the back. It’s been loved!
The guitar has original plastic parts, pickguard, backplates, pokerchip, switchtip, knobs…everything is original. The 4 pots are dated to 1959. The original non-wire ABR-1 and the original stoptail are still in place, as the original Grover tuners. Two of the PAF humbuckers however went through some repairs. We had all three authenticated by our friend Andreas Kloppmann in Germany.
The neck pickup is the untouched original PAF (only the wire had been cut), the middle pickup is a 1961 with rewound slug coil and the original bridge PAF has also a rewound slug coil.
This is a great opportunity to get a crazy rare and actually wonderful looking, playing and sounding Les Paul for 50% of the price of the super clean one we had a couple of years ago. We did not expect to find another one and this may be the last you’ll find on the market!
Comes incl. new case.
