1957 Gibson Les Paul Standard – Goldtop
This exceptional 1957 Gibson Les Paul Standard Goldtop comes loaded with two original non-sticker PAF humbuckers, marking the final configuration before Gibson introduced the Sunburst finish in 1958.
The playwear tells the story of a true rock ’n’ roll instrument – heavily played and loved. Classic belt-buckle wear on the back suggests a low-slung playing style reminiscent of legends like Slash or Jimmy Page. It’s clear this guitar was used, not just displayed – and for good reason: it sounds phenomenal, exactly as you’d expect from a late-’50s Les Paul.
The pickup covers have previously been removed – a common modification on vintage Les Pauls to achieve a more open and focused tone. We carefully removed the covers for inspection and confirmed the pickups have their original, untouched coils and tape and original wire.
All parts are original, with just a couple of minor exceptions: the jack plate is a replacement, though the original is included. The guitar retains its original pickguard, M69 rings, short seam aluminum stoptail and non-wire ABR-1 bridge. It has never been converted to Grovers – the original tuners are still in place. No breaks, no overspray – this guitar is clean where it counts.
One minor modification: the upper left screw of the bridge pickup ring broke off inside the body. A small adjacent hole was drilled to secure a new screw. There is also a slight mark near the bridge pickup – likely from a piece of tape or similar – where the clear coat didn’t age as much as the surrounding finish.
The guitar has been refretted at some point, ensuring excellent playability.
These ’57/’58 Goldtops continue to rise in value, closely following their Sunburst successors. This is a fantastic example with minimal issues – collector-grade but clearly a player’s guitar.
Includes the original 5-latch Lifton case.
